ABOUT WHEAT
Wheat in Ukraine
Wheat is grown all across the country, but central and south-central regions are the key growing areas of Ukraine. Wheat is planted in the fall and harvested throughout July or August of the following year. About 95% of it is winter wheat.
Once known as the breadbasket of Europe, Ukraine is about to regain that place as harvests soar. Ukraine produces mostly the hard red winter wheat or bread wheat. Normally, some 80% of domestic wheat crops are considered to be of milling quality in compliance with international standard requirements. In 2013 the production of wheat in Ukraine was 23,01 million tons. which is 59.18% more than in 2012.
There has been an approximate ten fold increase in wheat exports from the Ukraine to the EU since 2013-2014 making EU the second largest foreign trade partner for Ukraine, amounting to about 10%. 65% out of 1 million tons of wheat, exported to the EU were delivered to Spain.
